Denotation of the Word “Character”
As per Webster's word reference, character is characterized as: an individual in a play or novel; unmistakable characteristic; conduct regular of an individual or gathering; moral quality; notoriety; status; individual beingâ⬠. It is this last meaning of the word ââ¬Å"Characterâ⬠that this part manages: the idea of ââ¬Å"individualityâ⬠or ââ¬Å"individual beingâ⬠and how that thus constructs an individual for example the Self. This section centers around the solid qualities controlled by Blanche Haggard and Princess Sasha from Absent in the Spring and Grannie and Peter Maitland from Unfinished Portrait to examine the part of the Self which fabricates. An individual's independence can come out through different positive angles yet this part diagnostically contemplates the characters under four significant parts of self-realization, the endeavoring towards wellbeing, the journey for personality and self-governance, the longing for greatness by discovering achievement in their own terms as opposed to being characterized by the general public. There's a lot more to making a genuine character than picking physical characteristics and character qualities. The most critical characters remain in the peruser's psyche since they have contacted the feelings of the peruser and turn out to be genuine individuals. While embellishment such a character, the creator never stops at the cliché fundamentals however proceeds. That is actually what Christie has done to her characters picked for this investigation. These characters don't fall under the general standard which the peruser can so regularly foresee or anticipate. The principal character, Blanche Haggard stands as a relationship to reinforce the case that the Self is worked as by method of discovering achievement in one's own terms as opposed to being characterized by the general public. Blanche Haggard, Joan's old fashioned companion whom she hasn't seen for more than 15 years, is an all around reproduced, cheerful lady, who has changed much throughout the years. Joan takes a gander at Blanche as somebody who has had a lamentable life. Be that as it may, Joan's point of view of Blanche is one-sided. This likewise features the way that not all portrayals are ââ¬Å"likeableâ⬠or legit. On account of Blanche Haggard, her actual character is uncovered from a smidgen of truth from Joan's point of view yet for the most part through her own discoursed. Joan's perspective on is consistently with the descriptive word ââ¬Å"Poorâ⬠as a prefix in her possession, which is a bogus idea that she has painted of Blanche. In her own petitions that night after her experience with Blanche, Joan implores, ââ¬Å"God-thank thee-poor Blanche-thank thee that I dislike that-extraordinary leniencies every one of my favors dislike Poor Blanche-Poor Blanche-extremely unpleasant all her own deficiency obviously frightful a serious stun express gratitude toward God-I am distinctive Poor Blancheâ⬠Blanche, be that as it may, is a confident person. She has had three spouses, and wedded to the fourth at present. She apparently is somebody who accepts life as it comes, figures out how to give up and acknowledges what's adversely tossed at her and use it as a venturing stone to construct her Self. To additionally demonstrate this, one can see that all through her exchange with Joan, Blanche's certainty is something that continually goes to the cutting edge. As indicated by Joan, Blanche introduced a despicable appearance yet Blanche doesn't appear to mind. To her, outer appearances don't make a difference for she has characterized accomplishment in her own terms. To her, an alluring appearance is not really important for she has a man who adores her for what her identity is and on the off chance that he doesn't (on account of her past relationships) she proceeds onward and doesn't abide in the ruins of a messed up relationship. Her looks needn't influence her any longer, for to her, prosperity is carrying on with a cheerful life. She says from experience,ââ¬Å"Oh well, that is the behavior that most people find acceptable. You quit when you should stick, and you take on a thing that you would be wise to take off alone; brief life's so dazzling you can scarcely trust it's actual â⬠and following that you're experiencing a damnation of hopelessness and languishing! At the point when things are going admirably you think they'll keep going forever and they never do-and when you're down under you think you'll never come up and inhale again. That is the thing that life is, isn't it?â⬠It is very apparent that Blanche says this out of recognition. She begins by saying this is the method of world for she has experienced the many good and bad times throughout everyday life. She had stopped once, however retaliated up to her feet, began to let of go of things that hurt her on the off chance that she continued clutching them (her messed up relationships for example). She portrays how individuals picture life to be great and euphoric just to be looked by hardship and enduring that makes them hit absolute bottom. This shows Blanche is somebody who isn't anxious about the real world. She faces an incredible fact and doesn't escape from reality. She has had a lot of harsh encounters from an earlier time when she describes and depicts the numerous other men throughout her life. There's Harry, a terrible parcel yet gorgeous; Tom, who didn't add up to a lot; Johnnie, who was acceptable while it endured (which implies she continues changing her men when she realizes it's an ideal opportunity to proceed onward ecstatic) and Gerald, who wasn't acceptable either, yet that is the thing that made her attached to him. A lady looks for a man who is her equivalent; somebody who can challenge her and be a radical on occasion. Blanche's tendency towards such men is verification that she herself is one. She doesn't lament any of her life decisions for she has just done as such and now recognizes what to pay special mind to. She is just pulled in to men, who are distinctive such as herself. They aren't up to any great, however that is the thing that makes her partial to them. This comes as a stun to Joan. She feels that it was ââ¬Å"an unpalatable index of menâ⬠. Be that as it may, Joan's method of characterizing achievement is limited when contrasted with Blanche who is a lot of tolerant and free. In one such case, she asks a talk inquiry, to say something as opposed to find a solution: ââ¬Å"And when you're down under you think you'll never come up and inhale again. That is the thing that life is, isn't it?â⬠Blanche doesn't remain stale in the entanglements of life however she returns up more developed than any other time in recent memory to handle any circumstance nearby. She had accepted that one would never come up and inhale, however it isn't the situation for her and her life stands declaration to that. In one case, Joan portrays Blanche saying, ââ¬Å"looks years olderâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦could be more than 48â⬠. Be that as it may, this doesn't show her physical appearance of being old however it allegorically demonstrates her degree of development as the years progressed. The way that she doesn't look her genuine age yet looks a lot more established than she truly is comes here as an indication of smoothness, as opposed to being old. She has encountered much in life that she doesn't look her age, at present. In any event, when Joan feels frustrated about her (as society does) she promptly says that she shouldn't squander her compassion on her. She isn't one to settle in her ââ¬Å"misfortunesâ⬠as Joan would stated, yet proceeds onward and accepts life as it comes back again focusing on the way that she characterizes achievement in her own terms as opposed to how society sees it. ââ¬Å"Don't squander your feelings on me. I've had loads of funâ⬠she says. Her confidence doesn't just make her hold herself diversely yet it additionally adheres to those around. For example when, Blanche raises the subject of Rodney ââ¬Å"having a meandering eyeâ⬠or Joan's little girl, Barbara, not making some cheerful memories at home and henceforth chose to be offered and gone, Joan is quickly impacted by this for she really thinks about the equivalent. This obviously demonstrates Blanche's sureness in her assessments remains with her as well as effects everyone around her as well. In one occasion Joan ponders internally, ââ¬Å"What was it that Blanche had said?â⬠Even if Joan sees Blanche in an unexpected way, she despite everything is affected by what Blanche needed to state. Blanche likewise doesn't stress over the manner by which she is decided by others. Her self is based on the solid establishment of reality she has confidence in about herself. She is grateful in nature for she cheers Joan for how well she has raised her family. This doesn't anyway imply that she doesn't have a delightful life, however shows that she's found out to see the positive qualities in others; their opposite side. She's seen everything and in this way has a positive interpretation of life. She is of the possibility that ââ¬Å"Come what may, I will confront it and come out successfulâ⬠. Hence, Blanche Haggard, is a character whose capacity to characterize accomplishment on her own terms, draws out her independence which thus fabricates her Self. Subside Maitland from Unfinished Portrait additionally falls under this classification. Subside, who is Celia's closest companion's sibling, has an enjoying towards Celia and they in the end begin to look all starry eyed at yet don't get hitched. Be that as it may, from what the peruser translates, Peter is of a phenomenal character. He doesn't surge or rush and takes everything in a sportive mentality. His witticism is ââ¬Å"Well, why go through your time on earth surging? Relax appreciate yourself.â⬠Peter's capacity to quiet himself down in a quick staged world is profoundly characteristic of his character. In Celia's own words, Peter was ââ¬Å"dear, accommodating and sweet-temperedâ⬠. Like Blanche, he accepts life as it comes and doesn't anticipate much consequently either. Being an officer in the military, Peter realizes that life's brimming with sudden conditions; he comprehends what might be Celia's destiny on the off chance that she married him however he leaves her alone receptive with regards to proceeding onward and discovering another person. In spite of being the patriarch, he doesn't confine Celia yet we should her be free in her decisions. In his letter to Celia, he says, ââ¬Å"I'd like you to live like a queen.â⬠To him, letting individuals sprout in their own spaces and watching them develop is viewed as his actual happiness. When Celia succumbs to Dermot (her better half), Peter takes it sportively. He praises Celia on her decision and wishes her well. To Peter, he characterizes accomplishment by not o

Minaj goes on to show her hourglass figure in another scene of the video, she appears to be working out and only in a thong, bra and sneakers. The video then shows Minaj in a kitchen where she peels a banana, looks at it admiringly and then tosses it away. What is the message here? Males, it represents a maleââ¬â¢s genitals. Remember, there is absolutely no male presence. Even with booty everywhere, it s all done under a lack of male gaze. The audience is simply watching a group of beautiful women with impressive butts and flawless twerks around a man-less tropical island. The ways Steinbeck creates dislike of and sympathy for Curleyââ¬â¢s wife in his novel ââ¬ÅOf Mice and Menââ¬Â Essay Essay Example
The ways Steinbeck creates dislike of and sympathy for Curleyââ¬â¢s wife in his novel ââ¬Å"Of Mice and Menâ⬠Essay Paper ââ¬ËOf Mice and Menââ¬â¢ is a short novel by John Steinbeck. which is set in 1930s America. At this clip in American History they were enduring from a difficult striking economic depression. This book is set on a spread in Soledad. California. Throughout this novelette. Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman is used as a secret plan device by Steinbeck to research subjects like favoritism and attitudes toward adult females in the 1930s. Although. she is thought of as a ââ¬Ëtartââ¬â¢ at the beginning. throughout the novel we develop our sentiment of Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman. Steinbeck introduces us to Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman through the sentiment of Candy. His positions and sentiments are misogynous. when he calls her a ââ¬Ëtartââ¬â¢ . doing the reader prejudiced tow ards Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman before we even meet her. Candy references that she ââ¬Ëgot the eyeââ¬â¢ explicating that she is being coquettish and immoral as we are told that she is flirt with other work forces directly after we are told that she married to Curley. Steinbeck uses this technique to do the reader want to read on and happen out more. When Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman is foremost introduced we gain a colored feeling from her description ââ¬ËShe wore a cotton house frock and ruddy mulesââ¬â¢ reenforcing our original sentiment of a ââ¬Ëtartââ¬â¢ . The vesture she wears is besides incongruous on a on the job spread and expensive during the economic depression demoing that she wants to affect. She is high care as ââ¬ËShe had full roughed lips and wide-spaced eyes. to a great extent made upââ¬â¢ screening to the reader that she has to look perfect before go forthing the house and needs to look reasonably to the work forces. Steinbeck to the full describes the actions of Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman. This shows physical awareness the work forces have towards her. ââ¬ËShe put her custodies behind her back and leaned ag ainst the door frame so that her organic structure was thrown forwardââ¬â¢ Steinbeckââ¬â¢s description of Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman actions is non merely to depict the menââ¬â¢s physical consciousness of the character but to demo the despair of Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman and other adult females in the 1930s. Throughout the address between George and Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman. she doesnââ¬â¢t sustain oculus contact. ââ¬ËShe looked at her fingernailsââ¬â¢ this implies that she is seeking to chat up with her eyes. This usage of organic structure linguistic communication is in a coquettish and provocative manner. When Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman enters ââ¬ËThe rectangle of sunlight in the door manner is cut offââ¬â¢ Steinbeck uses this barricading visible radiation to propose that Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman is an obstruction. to Lennieââ¬â¢s and Georgeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ëlightââ¬â¢ which is mentioning to their dream. This means we do non like Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman as she poses a menace. The fact that George calls Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman ââ¬Ëtrampââ¬â¢ makes us instantly dislike her as we trust Georgeââ¬â¢s sentiments. As her visual aspect is described foremost this suggests that others judge her on the manner she looks and her visual aspect i s regarded as her most of import characteristic. This thought is developed through Curleyââ¬â¢s wifeââ¬â¢s gender which is apparent in her obvious flirtation when she moves so that ââ¬Ëher organic structure was thrown forwardââ¬â¢ and speaks ââ¬Ëplayfullyââ¬â¢ . Through Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman actions. Steinbeck suggests that her gender is the lone signifier of power she has and is the lone manner she knows to derive attending. The first entryway for Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman lives up to and corroborate the feelings created by Candy. Although ab initio we believe what Candy said. as the novelette progresses more of her character is revealed. When Slim finds Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman. at the terminal of her first entryway ââ¬ËShe was all of a sudden apprehensiveââ¬â¢ which could propose that Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman is scared of Curley and suggests that he is aggressive towards her associating to the subject of force. The reader is discerning of Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman and the harm she may do. The work forces of the spread think she is ââ¬Ëjailbaitââ¬â¢ . and they are scared that they may lose their occupation. The reader agrees with what the work forces on the spread think as she may take to the ruin of George and Lennie. At this point in the novel. Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman is seen with disdain and there is small sympathy for her. The repeat of the coloring material ââ¬Ëredââ¬â¢ suggests danger and passion. supported by similarities between her and the miss in Weed. Not merel y is Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman described as a streetwalker. but besides as endangering. When she enters the barn where Crook and Candy are. they are both afraid and ââ¬Ëwere scowling down off from her eyesââ¬â¢ this bar of oculus contact could be seen that she is exercising power over the work forces. She exercises her power by endangering to hang Crooks. ââ¬ËI could acquire you stung up on a tree so easyââ¬â¢ . this links to the subject of force as she acts nastily and cruelly which reflects the societal hierarchy of the clip. She goes from being bullied by the work forces to strong-arming the ââ¬Ëweak onesââ¬â¢ . Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman gets frustrated by their unresponsive behavior towards her. She is used to foreground the racialist society and to demo the position of black people at that clip in America. The reader possibly discerning toward Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife. yet it is obvious that she may be lonely. Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman has excessively much clip on her custodies ââ¬ËHer face was to a great extent made upââ¬â¢ this is shown by how much do up she is ever have oning. None of the work forces on the spread will speak to her as they are scared that they may be tempted ââ¬ËMaybe you better travel along to your ain house nowââ¬â¢ The ground they donââ¬â¢t talk to her is that they are scared that they could acquire into problem with Curley. Steinbeck does this to demo how stray adult females were in the 1930s. Even though Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman has merely been married two hebdomad we get told that Curley is at the ââ¬ËCat houseââ¬â¢ and isnââ¬â¢t w ith his new married woman with would propose that he has no clip for her and a deficiency of love. When she is in the barn with Crooks. Candy and Lennie ââ¬Ëtalkinââ¬â¢ to a clump of bindle stiffs ââ¬âa nigger anââ¬â¢ a dum-dum and a icky olââ¬â¢ sheep- an ââ¬Ëlikenââ¬â¢ it because they ainââ¬â¢t cipher elseââ¬â¢ this show she will travel to great lengths to speak to person and will even speak to the ââ¬Ëweak onesââ¬â¢ when cipher is about. When she is entirely in the barn with Lennie. she expresses her solitariness ââ¬ËI get atrocious lonelyââ¬â¢ she does this to derive understanding from the reader. although she is stating the one individual who wonââ¬â¢t understand what she is stating. Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman is the lone adult females on the spread and this could associate to her solitariness. This links to one of Steinbeck subject. solitariness and how Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman being female agencies that she is invariably segregated and isolated because of her gender. As the reader reads on we start to gain that Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman isnââ¬â¢t what we expected. We start to see that she is more of a victim. Her name Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman suggest that she is a ownership of Curleyââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËCurleyââ¬â¢s is even cockierââ¬â¢n of all time since he got marriedââ¬â¢ this suggest that she is something that Curley can demo off to the other work forces on the spread. Besides Slims Canis familiaris and Aunt Clara all have name but Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman doesnââ¬â¢t which even more suggests that she is object in society. She is besides married to Curley who isnââ¬â¢t spends his Saturday eventide in the ââ¬ËCat houseà ¢â¬â¢ which does propose that Curley has no love for his new married woman. Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman has an unconditioned apprehension of society. She understands her places and knows what she can and canââ¬â¢t do. ââ¬Ënobodyââ¬â¢d listen to youââ¬â¢ they are all incapacitated as society is rough and what Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman says applies to all of them in the barn. Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman is merely coquettish and average to work forces because it is the lone manner she knows who to speak to work forces. Although she is portrayed as a victim and as lonely. we still see as manipulative when she speaking to Lennie nears the terminal of the novel. As Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman describes to utilize the ground why she is married to Curley it come apparent that she married Curley to acquire off from her Mother and so she wants to utilize Lennie to acquire off from Curley. Steinbeck has used this to do the reader feel that Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman is naif and has hapless opinion. The reader can state that Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman has thought through what she wants Lennie to make and she thinks that she can utilize him to her advantage. In this subdivision she is being manipulative ââ¬Ëyou can interrupt his other hanââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ She can see that Lennie can stand up to Curley even if it is merely to a basic degree. Although you could reason that Curleysââ¬â¢s married woman was described as a ââ¬Ëgirlââ¬â¢ which suggests artlessness and naivete. She is in some ways like Lennie in that she doesnââ¬â¢t think before the action. The apparels she wear can be seen as to be dressing up to look like graven images and is concealing under her make-up. If this is all true so Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman suffered a horrid decease which she doesnââ¬â¢t merit the decease she was given. Throughout the novelette. Steinbeck looks at the thought of the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢ . like George and Lennie. Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman has a dream and that was to be in the ââ¬Ëpitchersââ¬â¢ . Her dream is to be actress but is it truly the thought of being an actress or the ground was that she wanted the money so she would be able to purchase the apparels but non to make the work. She met a adult male who said she could be in the films but neer got missive. she blames her female parent for neer acquiring missive but it is possible that the work forces neer really was from the films and if he was at the films so why was he a unknown riverbank dance. Besides the fact that we are told about the rhinal voice ââ¬ËHer voice had a nasal. brittle qualityââ¬â¢ show to the reader that she is deluded and that she will neer do her dream but has them to maintain traveling in what is a suffering life. Work force are prejudice towards Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman on the manner in which she looks. Steinbeckââ¬â¢s initial portraiture of Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman shows her to be a average and seductive enchantress. and alive she is the connexion to Eve. she brings evil in to m enââ¬â¢s lives. She is besides blamed for many of the action of Curleyââ¬â¢s and she is thought of merely by how she looks non by how she is. The concluding scene for Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman is her decease. When she is acquiring murdered. the understanding lies with Lennie. Steinbeck did this to make more sympathy from the reader for Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman. This is what Steinbeck has been taking up throughout the book and to the ruin of the relationship between George and Lennie. HEr beauty is shown though when she is dead ââ¬Ëshe was really reasonably and simpleââ¬â¢ . this creates more sympathy from the reader by demoing how simple and pretty she was. Besides the to associate with the description the word ââ¬Ëgirlââ¬â¢ is used. to make artlessness. The reader perceptual experience of her has changed ââ¬ËAche for attending all goneââ¬â¢ Steinbeck wrote this to do the readers realise the abnormalcy of what has been done and how we can merely see her artlessness. simpleness and beauty. The concluding description of Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman shows us the miss beneath what the universe she lived in made her. Although we see this different side to Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman. Candy still has his misogynous sentiment of Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman. ââ¬ËEverââ¬â¢body knowed youââ¬â¢d muss things upââ¬â¢ this show that Candy blames Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman for what has happened even though Lennie was the 1 who murdered Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman. Candyââ¬â¢s deficiency of sympathy towards her creates more sympathy from the reader. Steinbeck does this to demo that Women got blamed for what the work forces did even if they had nil to make with it. In decision. Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman was in fact the victim of her society and although some of her action were in some ways indecent for a freshly married adult females it. in some manner this shows how much she was really a victim. Besides she was occupation copying the action and dressing like the histrions which she idolised. I personal believe that Curleyââ¬â¢s married woman was non all to fault for her action s and hence she did non merit the decease that she got as it was harsh a brutal.

Word Choice Imply vs. Infer - Proofeds Writing Tips Blog
Word Choice Imply vs. Infer Word Choice: Imply vs. Infer The words imply and infer are often confused. Both are verbs relating to communication, but one refers to the speaker/writer, and the other applies to the listener/reader. In a conversation, for instance, one person could imply something, while the other would need to infer their meaning. This, in fact, is a good way to remember how these terms should be used: A speaker implies, while a listener infers. Read on to learn more. Imply (To Suggest) The verb imply means to suggest something through speech or writing without explicitly stating it. It would be used in a sentence like this: The President implied that he had no intention to introduce the law. Aside from direct communication, imply can also be used when drawing a conclusion that follows from particular situation, as in the sentence: His suitcase implied that he intended to stay the night. The word imply is occasionally also used to mean necessitates or entails, as in the sentence: A vacation to Japan implies air travel. Infer (Derive by Reasoning) The verb infer means reach a conclusion based on the evidence presented. This involves examining clues and making a judgment based on reasoning, rather than on the basis of explicitly stated factual information. For example, if you were to ask someone whether chocolate milkshake is the best flavor, the person youre speaking to could respond by pointing out that there are lots of different flavors of milkshake. Although this wouldnt be an explicit rejection of the superiority of chocolate milkshake, we could infer that the other person disagrees (or at least that they also like other kinds of milkshake) based upon what they have said. What a listener infers is not necessarily what was intended by the speaker. For instance, the listener might interpret what has been said incorrectly. Imply or Infer? Whether you need to use imply or infer in any given situation is all about point of view. The person speaking or writing is the one doing the implying. The person listening or reading is the one doing the inferring. Book Analysis The Male Brain
The Male Brain Similarly to Loan Breezinesss The Female Brain, Lethe Male Brain takes us through the changes throughout the lifetime of a male brain. It breaks down each stage of a males life and takes a look at the happenings of their brains from boyhood, through their teen years, into relationships and children, finally ending with the mature male brain. The Male Brain explains many of the biological reasons, along with the learned reasons behind many of the common traits and behaviors found in males. The focus of this analysis will be on how male brains differ from females, and whether that gives them n advantage or disadvantage in work settings. It will include how the early development of boys brains effects their traits and personalities, how men and women differ when it comes to emotions, and how all of these things contribute to the historical stereotype that men are better leaders than women. As Brazening explained, from a very early age boys are interested in completely different things than girls.Although I dont agree with her idea that boys are programmed to act a certain way, believe that part of their traits belongs to their biological hardwiring and the other are due to their ultra and upbringing. As it says in The Male Brain, at a young age boys are more likely to take risks and break rules. This relates directly with Eagle and Carols Through the Labyrinth when they state women presumably evolved a strong concern with their own personal safety as well as tendencies to be fearful and anxious and to avoid danger and risk. These statements translate very well into the stereotypical man when it comes to his career. While most of the time women are afraid to take risks, as it said in the TED talk Why We Have Too Few Women Leaders, men are willing risk takers which leads to egger paybacks, especially in their careers. Women are also more concerned with how other people f eel and everyone getting along, however beginning when boys are around a year old they begin ignoring their own mothers facial expressions. At this age, the opposite happens in little girls. They read and react to the slightest look of disappointment or anger on their mothers face almost immediately. This could contribute to the fact that when men grow up they are more self-centered and concerned with their own career, while women are worried about how others feel. Referring again to the TED elk View We Have Too Few Women Leaders, they stated that men are more likely to take credit for their own achievements, while women give a lot of credit to those who helped and supported them. This is one of the traits that men have which give them more opportunities to be promoted and join higher ranks in the work force.Another point that Brazening made was that during their younger years, boys are obsessed with and imitate their dads, uncles, or any other male role models that could be considered alpha males. Believe that this obsession with alpha males could lead to the strong drive hat men have to become one, whether it is in the ir home or their workplace. Again, strength and aggression are mentioned a lot. In her book Brazening states, by age two, a boys brain is driving him to establish physical and social dominance. All these traits and behaviors either taught or wired into boys at such a young age, all contribute to their actions and behavior as they grow older and climb the ladders in their careers. The common issue of men accuse women of being too emotional and women accuse men of not being emotional enough is explained very well in the male brain. From personal experience, I have seen relationships not work out just because one person doesnt feel the other is listening, or one doesnt react the way the other was hoping for. After reading this book I realize that all of this due to the fact that men and women process emotions differently. When faced with a problem, a man doesnt respond emotionally, instead his brain looks for a way to solve it. I think Brazening says it best when she states The male brain is a lean, mean, problem-solving machine. Faced with a personal problem, a man will use his analytical brain structures to find a solution. This leads to others getting annoyed by male responses because they feel as if their emotions are not being acknowledged and instead are being given advice and direction that they didnt want to hear. As hurtful as this can be in personal situations, I feel like it could be proven helpful in professional work situations. As it says in Eagle and Carry, women usually respond in a manner that acknowledges others rights and their own rights, giving a more emotional response. Men also react to situations by hiding their emotions. If they are scared or nervous their instincts tell them to mask that ND not show those feelings in their facial expressions. They learn at a young age that acting cool and hiding their fears are the unwritten laws of masculinity. believe that the differences in how men and women react to emotions and how they use their emotions gives men another advantage in the work force. After comparing both The Female Brain and The Male Brain, it has changed my views a little bit about how men are natural leaders. I believe that in our society today men are better suited to handle leadership roles. The use of their aggression and self-preservation is the type of traits that get people far in their careers in our world today. It is more likely that doing whatever it takes is hardwired into a males brain than females. In The Male Brain it says Instinctive male-male competition and hierarchical fighting is driven by both hormones and brain circuits. I interpret this as men having it built into their brains that they need to be the best no matter what. I dont feel like women have the same instincts. Women are more worried about how others feel and their emotions. As it says in Eagle and Carry, Women emerge more often than men as the social facilitators. This means that they trivet to help people get along but dont usually hold much power themselves. I believe that women dont hold as many executive jobs as men because to climb to those roles in todays society require someone who looks out for themselves before others.Another aspect of men fitting the leadership role better is due to the fact that they dont react to emotions as women do. The fact that men try to come up with solutions to problems is ideal for todays work force. The fact that they can pull of an instinctive poker face could also help when it comes to making deals, making tough decisions, ND controlling their emotions. However, I do believe that there are some leadership roles that require more of a womans emotions and consideration. That being said, those leadership roles usually arent what we think of in our society when we think of powerful leaders. All in all, after the comparison of the male and female brain I do believe that males have quite a few biological and cultural traits that give them an advantage over women in the workforce. Its not that I dont believe that women cant be successful, I just believe in order for them to climb the ladder n their careers, especially the corporate one, they need to learn some of the traits that men are born with.Eagle and Carry put it perfectly when they say Changes in the psychology of women and men follow f rom changes in their roles. The early development Of the brains Of boys, the differences in response to emotions between men and women, and the natural leadership qualities that men possess have been giving them an advantage in the work force. However, I feel that as society changes, women will be able to adapt and make more progress and become just as successful in their careers.

Do Lotteries Benefit The Poor? :: essays research papers fc
Do Lotteries Benefit the Poor? Lotteries take advantage of the poor in several ways. The lottery entices the poor to waste their money on lottery tickets, rather than everyday necessities, such as food, clothing and shelter. The main way that lottery promoters succeed in attracting the poor is through the persuasive use of advertisements. Other members of anti-lottery groups believe lottery advertisements are deceitful and attract poor people to its promises. Flashy slogans and pictures of large amounts of money are more than enough to pull the needy closer. These poor people are those that least need to be attracted, because they do not have the money to spend on tickets. This wasted money on advertisements is capital that should be used to help the poor in socially useful programs. The lottery is nothing more than a money-taker that uses advertisements to persuade those in search of money to try the lottery. à à à à à The money spent on advertising for the lottery is an absurdly large figure. Not only are the poor wasting money on lotto tickets, but the government is also wasting money on advertising for the lottery. The government only started to heavily advertise when they saw the annual sale of lotto tickets declining. In 1998, the lotteryââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"sales growth slowed by two point five percent in one yearâ⬠¦ and new lottery products were created to rekindle public interest, focused primarily towards the poorâ⬠(Ira Teinowitz 3). Most of these products consisted of corny scratch of tickets where prizes got no higher than five hundred dollars. It has been reported that nearly 200 million dollars were spent on lotto advertising in one year between the 38 participating state lotteries (Teinowitz 3). ââ¬Å"The New York lottery takes in more than $2 billion in sales each year, and it spends $30 million in advertising to keep the cash rolling inâ⬠(Joshua Shenk 22). This is very destructive spending, because this money could be used for schools, charities, and college education. Besides the money spent on such ads, these ads are obviously focused towards the poor person who just needs to read a few catchy words to help himself by a ticket. A study by the Heartland Institute has indicated that the poor spend more money than the non-poor on lotteries, ââ¬Å"not only as a percentage of their income, but also in absolute termsâ⬠(Shenk 22). The advertisements have slogans such as ââ¬Å"Play the Lotto, and you could win the stuff dreams are made ofâ⬠(Shenk 22).

American Popular Culture
What is popular American culture? Popular culture is a way of life. Itââ¬â¢s a lifestyle of a group of people. The elements of everyday life consist of popular culture. These are the artifacts, institutions, and sorts of a general knowledge of a society, the common knowledge and practices of a specific group at a specific time. Popular culture reflects and influences peopleââ¬â¢s way of life because it is related to a precise time and place. It is temporary, and new phases take over from former favorites like singers, musicians, artists, media authors. But popular culture is all over the world nowadays. It is almost everything that surrounds us in our society today. It slowly builds up and becomes habits on what we do as we see. Some patterns in my pop culture inventory include photography, films, magazines and cell phones. I simply love photography with the fact that I have many photographer friends. Their photos inspire me in many different ways, such as the outlook to life in an image, the insight of a person through a glimpse of a shadow and such. Films complete me in todayââ¬â¢s pop culture. It makes me realize more about life then pop culture itself. Magazines show me the kind of entertainment and celebrities we are surrounded by. It also shows how popularity comes first in todayââ¬â¢s society, for almost about everyone. And cell phones are something not many people can survive without in todayââ¬â¢s world. Itââ¬â¢s the fastest source of communication. The values in which are being communicated by the items listed in my inventory are relevant to society. Photography can change a personââ¬â¢s view on life. Its actions that take place, through different angles, shows you a different look on life, by just looking at one photograph. You do need to let yourself away from the world and get in touch with the picture itself, that is how I see it. Films, movies, shows is the one category that I do follow up in todayââ¬â¢s pop culture. Not necessarily all genres of films. I love action, drama, romance and just perfectly made fairytales. I have always believed that movies have an enormous influence in our society and life. The meaning and main plots of each and every movie mean something, weather it may be stupid or a life lesson, there are so many different minded people in the world today that each and every meaning counts. Films are very convenient in todayââ¬â¢s society I believe. Magazines, though, may not be fully true about the popular celebrities today, but it definitely shows a lot with its images. The writings may be false, but it certainly shows us the image and lets us decide on our own. Itââ¬â¢s a big pleasure to see and decide for yourself. Cell phones are todayââ¬â¢s highest communication factor. There are new kinds of cell phones out every other month. The technology is on 24/7 producing newer brands of cell phones and upgrading the old ones. There are people that live off their cell phone, that they cannot take a step out of the house without their cell phone. Itââ¬â¢s a responsibility for them. American pop culture does not leave much of an impact on my personal decision making. Because of the fact that I donââ¬â¢t listen to pop culture when it comes to my personal decisions. I have my own values about everything in my life. I donââ¬â¢t let the pop culture decide for me because I believe pop culture is all surrounded by materialism and popularity. I come to believe and realize that todayââ¬â¢s pop culture can be the result of most of todayââ¬â¢s bad behavior in many aspects of peopleââ¬â¢s lives. My values come within my culture and from the way that I have been raised. Pop culture has never had an impact on my own personal decision making because I have been very aware of the influence of the pop culture for many years. While popular American culture is our daily cost, we as individuals always have a choice in how much we choose to participate. Most of the time as I make decisions, I do take into consideration of what is going on today, but never let it lead me to an influence to follow in its steps. The patterns in my pop culture inventory teach me something in my life. It influences me to the right roads. It also makes me see realize what I am being surrounded by today. As for my personal decision making, I do what I want to do, when I want to do and who I want to do it with, but never what the media presents.

Essay on Enlightenment through Reading Great Literature
Enlightenment through Reading Great Literature Great literature has created controversy, enlightenment, and has perpetually stimulated the imagination of readers everywhere. The ability to learn from past experience that crosses religions, races, and times helps separate the great literature from the chaff. A good, entertaining story is not enough to produce a truly great and enduring work. Great literature is characterized by its ability to retain value in truth and entertainment even though changing culture. The influence of great literature has been a legacy of the human race for 1000s of years. Arguably the most influential of books is the Bible. It has been a top seller for almost all of eternity. However, itâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The ability to interpret a book in multiple ways stretches the imagination of a reader and challenges a reader to place more thought into the reading of a book and no longer accept things at face value. Instead of a physical or purely imaginative enjoyment, great literature creates webs of connotations, ironies, and allusions which provide a purely mental entertainment. The entertainment of a truly good book is characterized by its ability to connect to other great works while stimulating thought in many different, yet related, subjects. A lucid example is Brave New Worlds society as a parallel to the oppression of current society and the problems of absolute power. This enjoyment is a unique experience for everyone. By discussing great books, everyone can see a different side of the picture, gaining from the unique experiences of everyone involved. The controversy that literature can provide allows unfair and biased views to be uprooted and looked upon by with a more objective view. Literature puts people to action by challenging their values and refreshing their views. Many long held traditions such as the selling of indulgences have been challenged by visionaries such as Martin Luther who posted his 95 theses on the church door, thereby causing a change in the beliefs of a large portion of the Catholic population. Quality of Living Analysis for Greenpoint, Brooklyn - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 5 Words: 1447 Downloads: 6 Date added: 2017/09/15 Category Advertising Essay Did you like this example? Greenpoint Greenpoint, Brooklyn is a culturally vibrant neighborhood full of a wide range of retail shops, restaurants, bars venues, banks, and other services. It is largely occupied by people of Polish descent (43. 6% according to the 2000 Census) and of Hispanic descent (19. 2%. ) The median income is $33,578, significantly lower than the corresponding national average of $41,994. Even with the median income in Greenpoint being almost $10,000 less than the national average, it has many of the same difficult characteristics shared by most New York City neighborhoods namely higher-than-average housing prices, overcrowded schools, higher utility prices, high local taxes, and lack of high paying jobs- all of which create a much higher total cost of living than most cities in the United States. A very low proportion of Greenpoint residents own their homes. According to the 2000 census, only 19. 2% of residents owned the homes they were living in, versus the 66. % national average. Rent prices have also consistently been on the rise, despite a few significant hiccups since the November 2008 financial crisis. It could be a great advantage to local residents if a program was set up providing local tax breaks for first time home owners in Greenpoint. Also, if the budget would allow, the City could match the Federal governmentââ¬â¢s pledge of $8000 in assistance for first time homebuyers. With $16,000 in assistance, and lowered taxes, many Greenpoint residents who otherwise would not be able to purchase a home might be able to afford that option. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Quality of Living Analysis for Greenpoint, Brooklyn" essay for you Create order A lower percentage of Greenpoint residents graduate high school than the national average (70. 4% vs. 80. 4%), which is also true for those with Bachelors degrees (21. 2% vs. 24. 4%). This lack of higher education hinders peoplesââ¬â¢ likelihood of getting high paying jobs, and in turn, makes it harder for them to move out of poverty into the middle class. A no-cost GED training center should be set up on Greenpoint Avenue to assist high school dropouts (of any age) in getting a diploma. Similarly, a Greenpoint GED College fund should be set up, to provide full CUNY scholarships for the top 10% of the graduates of these GED programs. This not only would incline many people to seek their own education who otherwise wouldnââ¬â¢t, but it would also prevent many of the best students from slipping through the cracks, and ensure that more Greenpoint kids got a chance to go to college. A hot button issue for Greenpoint (and Brookyn as a whole) is land-use and development. In 2005, the City Council passed a plan for the re-zoning and development of much of the Greenpoint and Williamsburg waterfront, as well a large block of the upland area. The plan is known as the Greenpoint-Williamsburg Land Use and Waterfront Plan. The plan focuses on changing zoning regulations along the northern Brooklyn waterfront and some of the upland areas, mostly to allow for large residential buildings to be built. Many residents of the community were worried about the waterfront development buildings being built very high, and pushed for regulations limiting the number of stories a building was allowed to have. There were also concerns about new condominium rental developments being geared only toward those with high incomes, and not toward those with average Greenpoint Williamsburg incomes (Williamsburg has an even lower median income than Greenpoint, $23,567. An attempt was made to strike a compromise between the community and the development groups, to solve both of these problems in one fell swoop. The compromise that was eventually passed is called the Greenpoint-Williamsburg Inclusionary Housing Program, which attempts to address concerns about both building height and low-income housing. The program stipulates that any development that includes a certain amount of affordable housing is eligible for a ââ¬Å"floor area bonusâ⬠, meaning they are allowed to build higher than the base restriction. There are 2 waterfront zones designated, R6 and R8; in R6 the base floor area restriction is up to 23 stories, in R8 it is 33 stories. With 20-25% of space within the development designated for affordable housing, this restriction can be raised 4. 7% to 30 stories and 40 stories respectively. While in theory this idea sounds promising, in practice it will not accomplish the goals it claims to. First of all, if a new development chooses not to go past the floor area restrictions, then there is no requirement that they provide any affordable housing. This leaves little incentive for developers to spend the extra money to build higher, and choose to include the low-income housing, as they only gain 4. 6% in floor area bonus, but have to designate over 20% of the total space of affordable housing. It ends up only inclining them against building past the base floor area restrictions (which many residents believe are already far too lax, allowing for unnecessarily tall buildings that block other buildingsââ¬â¢ views, and obstruct sunlight for large areas of the upland waterfront. I believe the plan should be changed to require that any and all new developments include at least 10% affordable housing to begin with. In addition to the affordable housing problem, the Greenpoint-Williamsburg Land Use and Waterfront Plan does not include any provisions for building new schools in the neighborhood. A new high school in Greenpoint is sorely needed, as most high school age students who cannot attend the Automotive Technical School, which is the only public high school in Greenpoint, end up attending schools in Ridgewood, Queens and Williamsburg. The plan also has no provisions for public daycare centers, tutoring or after-school programs, or improved transportation routes from the northwestern waterfront area (which is very difficult to commute from). It would be prudent to adjust the plan to require at least some of these programs to be set up in the area, at the shared cost of the developersââ¬â¢ and the City. It is important to use contractors and building companies from the local area when building new developments in Greenpoint. Too often, contracts for restoration projects, and new developments end up going to companies not from Brooklyn. For instance the old Greenpoint Hospital, which has been gathering dust since 1982, is going to be converted in 240 units of affordable housing, but the contract for this conversion went to TNS Development Group, based in Queens. Two other contracts, from local Greenpoint community groups, were both rejected. A perfect sector to create high paying jobs in the local community is in skilled construction and building, it seems only right to award the slew of development contracts that are available in the area to local contractors and companies. The Greenpoint-Williamsburg Inclusionary Housing Program should be edited to require that 50% of all building contracts from now on go to companies located in the 11222 area code. Shortly before her death, Jane Jacobs summed up the problems with the waterfront development plans in a letter to Mayor Michael Bloomberg: ââ¬Å"The communitys plan does not cheat the future by neglecting to provide provisions for schools, daycare, recreational outdoor sports, and pleasant facilities for those things. The communitys plan does not promote new housing at the expense of both existing housing and imaginative and economical new shelter that residents can afford. The communitys plan does not violate the existing scale of the community, nor does it insult the visual and economic advantages of neighborhoods that are precisely of the kind that demonstrably attract artists and other live-work craftsmen [but] the proposal put before you by city staff is an ambush containing all those destructive consequences. â⬠The roadblocks in the way of changing some of these plans would be great, and in order to make it possible, it would require a tremendous amount of public outcry and grassroots organization, in order to influence some major change of character in the highest levels of local power. If Mayor Bloomberg could be convinced to live up to his many campaign promises of building more public schools (and not just charter schools), and more affordable housing, then maybe Greenpoint could get the funds and zoning changes needed to build a new High School and provide good housing for its largest demographic, the lower class. In order to fund some of these projects, taxes could be raised on all waterfront property that is not designated to low income housing- which might provide some more incentive for developers to build more affordable housing in the area, and if it not, it might at least add some tax revenue that could help fund a new local high school. A plan that properly addresses all the issues in a neighborhood like Greenpoint would have to be much more expansive and detailed, and would surely encounter a lot of resistance from some local politicians and big development companies, but some of the ideas presented in this paper could have far-reaching positive consequences if they could gain enough public support, and be implemented.

How Democratic Is The American Constitution Essay
The question posed by both Madison and the Framers in the 85 ââ¬Å"Federalist Papersâ⬠and Dahl in his book How Democratic is the American Constitution? is how effective the Constitution is at promoting the ideals of a democracy. For Dahl, there are several issues surrounding the Constitution, from its drafting, to its ideology, to its relevance. By analyzing Dahlââ¬â¢s critiques of the Constitution in terms of the parallels that exist between factions and the two-party system, the issue of unequal representation, and the necessity for the Framers to compromise on their ideals to ratify the Constitution, Dahl defined a clear argument based in his general disapproval for the Constitution. However, by combining Dahlââ¬â¢s critiques with potential rebuttals from the opinions and perspectives of Madison and his fellow Federalists, it is evident that both Dahl and the Framers believed that if the constitution was completely successful, then the lives of the American people would be enhanced. While Dahl believed that the Constitution, ultimately, has not fully protected the rights of all persons, he, like the Framers, focused on the particulars of government that must be improved such that the American life is bettered. The Framerââ¬â¢s notion of a republic, or democratic republic form of government, rested on the necessity to limit the formation and success of factions. Yet, as Dahl argued, the irony of Madisonââ¬â¢s aversions to factions is that, not long after the ratification of theShow MoreRelatedHow Democratic Is the American Constitution?695 Words à |à 3 Pages Robert Dahls book How Democratic is the American Constitution, reminds us that the American Constitution wasnt the only possible base for a democratic system in America. When they got to the part about aliens I sort of lost interest. Everyone was Invited to take a blanket and lay out on the floor for meditation and a sound massage session with sounds provided by vibrations from crystal bowls and goblets. Remember how you can run your finger around the rim of a crystal goblet and get a nice humming sound? Well here in the Integration it really is magnified and enhanced creating a peaceful and relaxing interlude while laying on the blankets. I however sat in a plastic chair. Several fell asleep based on snoring sounds. Founded in 1954 by aeronautical engineer and biologist George Van Tassel, the Integration offers something called a ââ¬Å"sound bathâ⬠, and though we were not quite sure what a ââ¬Å"sound bathâ⬠would entail, we were pleasantly surprised to find that while the energy vortex may not have been subjugating our poor abused livers, the experience was Indeed quite relaxing. For 30 minutes, our host ââ¬Å"Tornâ⬠played varying tones on a set of quartz crystal slaying bowls as we meditated, listened to each other breathe, cough, and In some cases, nap. As It turns out, Van Tassel was not your run-of-the-mill OF;chasing desert eccentric. An aeronautical engineer and test pilot who worked for both Lockheed and alongside Howard Hughes at Hughes Aviation, he moved to the Mojave Desert in 1947 to operate an airport and inn. It was there that he claimed to be contacted elliptically by the Venusians, who were entrusting to him the secrets of cell rejuvenation. Acting on these instructions, Van Tassel began building the Integration, a 38 Ft. High dome inspired by Mosesââ¬â¢ Tabernacle and the writings of Tests. While not the rejuvenation center and time machine that Van Tassel had intended, it Is does serve as the only all-wood, acoustically perfect sound chamber in the U. S. According to Van Tassel, the site of the Integration Is actually a magnetic vortex, an Intersection of geometric forces that would amplify energy required for human cell rejuvenation ND healing. All that was needed to harness this great gift to the human race was a parabolic dome was designed to focus that energy, much like it focuses sound, toward the center with itââ¬â¢s spherical shape. Not meeting the standards of life-saving rejuvenation chamber Just yet, the Integration still serves a purpose as a meditation spot, event location, and unusual desert stop to feel closer to our Venusians friends in the stars. Outside of the dome itself there is a dry garden with a clump of hammocks serving as ââ¬Å"Hammock Villageâ⬠, and tons of interesting folk art and alien-themed knick- knacks such as the ââ¬Å"Alien Clings to Rockâ⬠piece you see here. To enjoy our sound bath, we found a blanket or yoga mat and claimed a spot in the circle, feet facing out. Our host described how the sound chamber works, and demonstrated how if we heard someone breathing or coughing as if they were right next to our ear, it was actually the person directly across from us on the other side of the dome. After a unusually long and stern warning regarding snoring during the bath, we closed our eyes as our host played the singing bowls. Bending the sound in ways that made it feel like it was owing in and out of our heads in waves, the intense sound was both soothing and unsettling. There was surprisingly a lot of snoring, and the earlier warning no longer seemed frivolous. After 30 minutes of hypnotic sound, we felt refreshed and ready to take on the rest of our desert adventure. Recently honored with a dedication and historical monument by the Ancient and Honorable Order of E Clampââ¬â¢s Vitas, Billy Holcomb Chapter, the Integration today receives many visitors drawn to experience the Integrationââ¬â¢s enhanced energy fields. An overnight stay at the Integration is said o result in waves of peace, heightened awareness, and relaxation of the mind and body.
